Professional counseling, or therapy, is a mutually agreed upon relationship between a client and a licensed professional to offer mental health services for the betterment of the client. Professional counseling in the state of North Carolina can be offered by a variety of licensed professionals including Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists to name a few. Counselors, or therapists, typically meet regularly with clients to discuss goals of the client and help clients reach those goals. Frequency and duration of sessions can vary widely. Therapists are not able to prescribe medication unless they are also medical professionals and have a license to prescribe medications.

Self help organizations are not professional counseling services. Some individuals may find that self-help services offer all the support they need. A list of popular self-help services for addiction and recovery is as follows:
Being an ally means being willing to act with and for others in pursuit of ending oppression and creating equality. Cecilia is working to build intentional allyship with marginalized populations including Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color (BIPOC) and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals. The plus “+” is meant to include other individuals on the gender spectrum not included in the LGBTQIA acronym. Incorporating neurodiversity is understanding everyone’s brain works in different ways and there is no “right” or “wrong” way to experience the world, there are just different ways to process information. Supporting neurodiversity includes supporting the needs of Autistics and others who manage neurological conditions (like ADHD) that impact how they interact with the world. As a neurotypical, white, cisgender woman of privilege, Cecilia is consistently working to identify and share her privilege to advocate for marginalized groups and reduce oppression, and strives to ensure this practice embodies these values.
